Al Smith is a veteran Kentucky journalist who has divided his 60-year career between newspapers and broadcasting. His 33 years as host-producer of KET’s Comment on Kentucky, from which he retired in 2007, was the longest such tenure in the Public Broadcasting System. After working for New Orleans daily newspapers for 10 years, he came to Kentucky in 1958 to edit a weekly paper in Russellville, which he later bought. After acquiring five more weeklies, he sold the business in 1985. Cofounder of the Institute for Rural Journalism at UK, he has headed a number of state organizations, as well as the Appalachian Regional Commission in Washington.
